Steven Levy

Attorney and Counselor at Law, of Counsel

It was his love for his grandmother and his family that brought Stephen Levy into elder law.” When I was in law school, my grandmother’s health began to deteriorate,” he explains. “Our family suddenly realized we hadn’t planned for this in advance and could be in big trouble. But we were fortunate because my grandmother’s condition wasn’t critical and I was able to use the resources of Albany Law School to make sure my grandmother and our family was protected.”Levy, who was very close to his grandmother, safeguarded her assets from nursing home costs. He arranged for her to have a health care proxy, a living will, a living trust and other important documents. And he took other measures to make sure she was provided for medically and her estate was provided for financially.”I got an early taste of what families go through,” he says. Now handling such responsibilities professionally, Levy is still driven by love of family — although now the families are those of his clients. “I identify with the emotions they’re going through,” he says. “I appreciate the issues they face. That’s why I’m so careful to make sure that they totally understand what they’re doing, so they can make decisions based on their family’s needs. That’s truly my touchstone — with love as your guide, what should you do at this critical juncture in your family’s life to produce the highest good for everyone — your parents, spouse, loved ones, yourself. No other question is as relevant or meaningful. I think clients know this or they wouldn’t have come to see us in the first place. I think they know that by going through this process they’re showing their feelings. That’s why they feel so good after they’ve done it, because it’s an act of love.”

After studying at Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s School for Overseas Students, Stephen Levy attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where he received his B.A. in Economics and Government. He then entered Albany Law School of Union University in Albany, NY where he received his Juris Doctor. Before joining Ettinger Law Firm in 1995, Mr. Levy’s professional career consisted of governmental work, including the U.S. House of Representatives and the Trusts & Estates Unit of the NYS Department of Law, as well as working as an attorney at a Glens Falls law firm concentrating on wills, estate planning and real property law.
